Mpower Albany is dedicated to providing innovative, sex-positive ways of bringing young GBT of Color together!
Who we are
Mpower Albany is a social movement. Our goal is to prevent new HIV infections, reduce the stigma surrounding HIV & STIs, and to engage people who are HIV-Positive, and get them the life-saving treatment they deserve. We offer a sex-positive, high-tech, and inviting drop-in space for young Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people of Color. The drop-in space is located on the second floor of ROCKS, our partner in helping our community.
How it works
The program is run by a Leadership Board which is made up of community members. The Leadership Board oversees all aspects of the program, from the drop-in space, to the planning of events and activities. Through this, Mpower Albany supports the community, and is able to provide fun, and interesting services and programs geared toward young GBT of Color.
Programs and workshops for the community include:
Programs & Services
“What’s the T?” is our one-time, 2 hour group that gives the basic HIV/STI information, sexy and fun strategies to reduce HIV risk, how to negotiate with sex partners, and how to talk with friends.
CLEAR (Choosing Life: Empowerment! Action! Results) is our one-on-one program that helps address concerns surrounding sexual risk, substance use risk, health care and self-care, treatment adherence, disclosure, and HIV stigma. Participants create their own short-term and long-term goals to help accomplish tasks they set for themselves with help of a trained counselor.
The Leadership Board is our "Board of Directors". It is made up of community members who are recruited from one of the above programs. These members share a dedication to helping young Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender, People of Color, who have sex with Men. Members meet twice a month to help plan fun and engaging events to help bring the community together.
Our HIV Testing & PrEP Program is our way of motivating the community to stay healthy. HIV Testing is provided during drop-in hours and by appointment. Our PrEP program helps nagivate HIV-negative people onto the once-a-day pill that is proven to reduce your risk of getting HIV by up to 99%.
Young Gay and Bisexual Men of Color continue to have increasing rates of new HIV infections. These rates are higher than any other group.
At Mpower Albany, we are working with our community to help reduce these new infections. With your help, we are actively working to "End the Epidemic"!
Mpower Albany is a program created by the community. We are always looking for community members who are interested in giving back.
Volunteers help with member check-in, tabling, decorating community events, and many other tasks. If you are interested in volunteering, or donating some of your time, please contact us!
